On the 6th of February, 2017, Nigerians will come out in their numbers. The reason is because popular Nigerian act- Tuface Idibia has called for a nationwide protest against the leaders of the nation. The musician seems to be tired of the prevailing hardship, the unpaid salaries and the high cost of living which has tripled in the space of two years. Tuface took to his Instagram page to make a long complaint over the situation of things and called on Nigerians to stand with him during this protest. The end game of the protest is not clear. A change of leadership or a policy overhaul?

His nationwide call was met with mixed feelings. This was a man who had vehemently preached change during the tenure of the last President, people murmured. This was a man who together with some Nigerian acts protested during the last subsidy strike. What changed? Change? Among those who felt that Tuface was being two-faced was a lecturer who felt that Tuface’s ambition to repopulate Nigeria should make him silent when the subject of politics arose. The lecturer made a Facebook post condemning Tuface’s ambition for One Nigeria, forgetting that he who lives in glass houses must not throw stones. Within minutes, angry Nigerians dug up the lecturer’s history and it was discovered that the lecturer in question had a habit of sleeping with several students before he passed them.

In my opinion, I find a man’s sexual exploits inconsequential in the face of his search for justice. Judgments should only be placed on he who speaks from both sides of the mouth.

Another set of protesters have come forward to lay claim to 5th February. This set of protesters have come under the #iStandwithBuhari umbrella; or is under the broom apt? They have laid claim to the President being the messiah and these “tribulations” the same thing every Messiah must suffer. This group has promised to hold the protest on the same day, their aim being commending the President for the job well done and urging Nigerians to give him patience to continue the “good work” he started. Leading this group is Tuface’s erstwhile buddy, Black face, who in a series of incomprehensible sentences threw jabs at his former friend, Tuface, accusing Tuface of talking only after his palms have been greased. Also on this group is also Lauretta Onochie, the President’s adviser on social media; lady who once led the subsidy removal protests and dollar increment a few years ago.

The last set of protesters who will lockdown Nigeria on the 5th of February will be the #iStandwithNigeria group. These Nigerians are frankly tired of the whole mess, the faction-war, the APC/PDP battles and the politics behind opportune protests. Members of this group do not have greased palms, have not dined with the devil or sold their conscience because they found themselves among men with bulging tummies and throaty laughs. These are average Nigerians; masses, victims of harsh economic policies who want to see their nation returned to a semblance of normalcy. Do not be surprised if you do not see majority of these people on the streets. They have learnt that Nigerian protests are actually run by puppeteers controlling puppets. These people will be at their salaried jobs or in their shops hoping that they afford to feed for one more day…
