“Most people don’t know what it means to be happy.”
“Are you happy?”
“I’m not like most people.”
“What makes you happy?”
I recently stumbled on this concept trailer while surfing YouTube days ago. The trailer and film which was produced by 55Media is based on Chimamanda Adichie’s Americanah, adapted and directed by Uche Aguh in 2017. While I love the concept film — as it brought back nostalgia in waves (and I’m definitely reading the novel for the seventh time, haha!) I noticed a few careless inconsistencies. One of which is that Isio Esiekpe, the woman who plays Ifemelu is skinny here as opposed to the full-figured Ifemelu of the book. She is also wearing a wig rather than sporting an afro. How could the director have missed that? Also, Obinze can’t even pronounce Ifem’s name well.
But hey, it’s a cute, lovely film and I think you should totally watch it. “Three vast continents, two revolutionary lovers, one epic story.”
What do you think?
